Drei Heuler beim Feuerwerk

Three howlers at the fireworks
After bravely defending our place on a windowsill for hours, the lanterns on the banks of the Giudecca are turned off as a sign of the beginning of the fireworks. Suddenly a young woman arrives and claims that there is still enough space, and if we stand on the bench, we will have a better view. An instant later she stands next to me and calls her two friends over the phone, that she found „a fantastic place“. At that moment the spectacle begins. I want to film the beginning, but she bumps into me. I make another try, but she’s jumping around in front of my camera. I start for the third time when her girlfriends arrive and climb up to join us, jostling me again so that the movie is spoilt. All the people around us are fascinated by the beautiful fireworks and do what one usually does, namely to shut up and nothing else, while the three lunatics cheer, shout, clap and, for whatever reason, praise the right-wing mayor from the Lega for the fireworks, as if he personally selected each rocket. In between they talk about which type of pasta resembles the last light phenomenon. – For half a day I sat on my butt only to enjoy this moment, and then the only three obviously completely insane under seventy thousand spectators remind me that in this world there is nothing for free.

To walk on water
On the day of the Redentore Festival, a bridge of pontoons will be built between the Giudecca and Dorsoduro, from which pilgrims after 7 pm will be able to make a pilgrimage to the Palladian church on the island. In the middle of the bridge there is a bow, under which you can go by boat. For the larger ships and the water buses the channel is blocked of course. During the evening, the basin of San Marco get filled with boats, mostly families, who want to watch the fireworks from the water. But there are also some larger disco boats making a lot of noise. The shores are packed with thousands of people sitting on the steps in front of the church or on the banks, or renting a table and bringing food in large coolers. Who owns a house or a bar on the right bank of the Giudecca, probably makes as much profit on this day alone by renting tables or window seats as during the rest of the year. The fireworks start half an hour before midnight and take about 40 minutes. Even before the last rocket has fired, you can see boats fleeing and people storming on the bridge, because who now takes his time, will come to bed very late. From Dorsoduro only a few people come to visit the church, but thousands try to get home via the bridge at once. For they do not trample on each other, the bridge is densely staffed with security personnel, apparently composed of all fire brigade, military and police units, at least I have never seen so many different uniforms. Only the scouts were missing.

Abendmahl abgesagt

Giudecca, Venezia

Typisch!

Last Supper, canceled
The boss wanted to boast again and acted as if he could walk over water. Of course he fell in and almost drowned. We took him to the hospital, P. said he would stay with him and they would come after us, we should go ahead. At the local it turned out that J.C. did not make a reservation for 13. The landlord offered us a tiny table right on the water, unfortunately there were no more chairs. We all just headed back home. Typical!

Warnung

Biennale, Venezia

Caution
One can not say it often enough and clearly enough: Climbing on smooth walls involves certain dangers.

Angekommen

Just arrived
Nice to be welcomed in Bavarian by Venice’s train station Santa Lucia, albeit with spelling mistakes and exotic punctuation: there we are!

Good to know
Life-saving equipment. Floatable bank. – I do not ask for individual medley. Breast stroke would be good, dead man’s float rather not.

What was left over at creation – After God had covered the whole world from top to bottom with Caucasian firs, because he found their color soothing and he just could not stand the sight of his totally failed creation, suddenly two nuisances of the Lower Conservation Authority appeared outside the front door and said that it was not alright, that it was a monstrous monoculture and that more than 95 percent of all species have now been extinct and whether he was aware of the consequences. Then they threatened him with a sensitive fine, in the worst case even with expropriation and withdrew. So he took out a few trees here and there and left them at the roadside. Let the garbage collection take care of it. People are still celebrating this event by building huge piles of conifers each year in February.
