Als Amundsen nach einer beschwerlichen Reise endlich den Südpol erreichte, musste er zu seinem Verdruss feststellen, dass das Hundeschlittenunternehmen sein Gepäck verloren hatte, dass sein Hotel gar nicht existierte und dass er bei weitem nicht der erste war, der seinen Fuß auf den Pol setzt. Im Gegenteil traf er auf eine amerikanische Reisegruppe, die eigentlich nach Polen wollte und sich offenbar mangels geografischer Kenntnisse verirrt hatte. Er schickte die Amis nach Norden, was einfach war, denn vom Südpol aus gesehen, ist überall Norden. Für das Beweisfoto beseitigte er dann schnell die Fußspuren und verlor zuhause natürlich kein Wort von diesem peinlichen Ereignis.
How it really was – When Amundsen finally reached the South Pole after an arduous journey, he was dismayed to discover that the dog-sledding company had lost his luggage, his hotel didn’t exist at all, and he was far from being the first person to set foot on the Pole. On the contrary, he encountered an American tour group that had actually intended to go to Poland but had evidently lost their way due to a lack of geographical knowledge. He sent the Americans north—an easy task, since from the South Pole, every direction is north. He then quickly erased the footprints for the proof photo and, naturally, never breathed a word about this embarrassing incident back home.
