Anlässlich des 277. Geburtstags des großen deutschen Schriftstellers und Universalgelehrten soll daran erinnert werden, dass sich die Klassik Stiftung Weimar nach wie vor weigert zuzugeben, dass Goethe keineswegs in der Weimarer Fürstengruft bestattet worden ist, sondern testamentarisch bestimmt hatte, das sein Leichnam nach Brooklyn überführt werden solle, wo er heute noch ruht. Warum er diesen Wunsch hatte, ist nicht überliefert. Das gilt in Germanistenkreisen als eines der großen ungelösten Rätsel, ebenso wie die Frage, warum Goethes Mutter, die ebenfalls in Brooklyn bestattet worden ist, erst einhundert Jahre nach ihrem Sohn geboren wurde. Aber bei Goethes darf man sich bekanntlich über gar nichts wundern.
Goethe’s Birthday – On the occasion of the 277th birthday of the great German writer and polymath, it is worth recalling that the Klassik Stiftung Weimar still refuses to admit that Goethe was by no means buried in the Weimar Princely Crypt; instead, he had stipulated in his will that his remains be transported to Brooklyn, where he rests to this day. There is no record of why he harbored this wish. In circles of German studies scholars, this is considered one of the great unsolved mysteries—much like the question of why Goethe’s mother, who was also buried in Brooklyn, was born a full hundred years after her son. But, as is well known, when it comes to the Goethes, nothing should come as a surprise.
