In keiner anderen Stadt habe ich auf so wenig Raum so viel Groteskes, Überraschendes, Schönes und Unfassbares gesehen wie in Auckland. Mitten in der Stadt gibt es oben auf einer Kuppe einen kleinen dreieckigen Park, dessen Wege von den dicken Ästen der dortigen Bäume überwuchert werden, vermutlich schon seit Jahrzehnten. Der Park wird aber nach wie vor benutzt. Mittags sah ich Menschen aus den Büros kommen und über die Äste klettern, um auf einer der Bänke ihre Pause zu verbringen. Niemand scheint sich daran zu stören, niemand ruft, wie es in Deutschland geschehen wäre, das Ordnungsamt und beschwert sich. Man lässt den Dingen ihren Lauf und erfreut sich an der bizarren Schönheit, die daraus entsteht.

Beauty through serenity – In no other city have I seen so many grotesque, surprising, beautiful and incomprehensible things in such a small space as in Auckland. In the middle of the city there is a small triangular park on top of a knoll, the paths of which have been overgrown by the thick branches of the trees there, probably for decades. However, the park is still in use. At noon I saw people coming out of the offices and climbing over the branches to take a break on one of the benches. Nobody seems to be bothered by it, nobody calls the regulatory office and complains, as would have happened in Germany. You let things take their course and enjoy the bizarre beauty that comes from it.

Die Kauribäume in Neuseeland werfen im Laufe ihres Lebens immer wieder die unteren Äste ab, um sich so vor parasitären Pflanzen zu schützen. Da das Kauriholz rot ist, sieht so ein frisch abgeworfener Ast aus wie ein aus dem Gelenk gedrehter Arm. Ich war mir auf den ersten Blick nicht sicher, ob ich die Polizei holen sollte.

Creepy! – New Zealand’s kauri trees shed their lower branches throughout their lives to protect themselves from parasitic plants. Since the kauri wood is red, a freshly shed branch looks like a twisted arm. At first glance I wasn’t sure if I should call the police.

Vor genau einem Jahr war ich in Neuseeland und das Beeindruckendste war nicht die abwechslungsreiche Landschaft und nicht die wenig abwechslungsreiche Küche, sondern ein Kauribaum namens Te Matu Ngahere in einem Kaurischutzgebiet in Northland. Der Baum ist zwar nur der zweithöchste Kauri, aber er hat den größten Umfang von über 16 Metern und ist geschätzte 2000 Jahre alt! Wenn man vor ihm steht, wirkt es, als würde man auf eine Felswand schauen. Man möge sich vorstellen, dass dieses Lebewesen schon da war, als in Rom Augustus herrschte oder vielleicht auch nur Mark Aurel. Als die Briten vor 200 Jahren hier ankamen, haben sie noch Tausende dieser Riesen sehen können, aber sie dachten sich nicht, was für ein Wunder das ist, sondern wie viel Bauholz man daraus machen könnte. Insofern ist es nur gerecht, dass sie jetzt einen König haben, der ihnen ständig mit seinem Naturfimmel auf die Nerven gehen wird. Möge er lange herrschen!

Reverence for old age – Exactly one year ago I was in New Zealand and the most impressive thing was not the varied landscape and not the little varied cuisine, but a kauri tree called Te Matu Ngahere in a kauri sanctuary in Northland. The tree may only be the second tallest kauri, but it has the largest girth at over 16 meters and is estimated to be 2000 years old! When you stand in front of it, it looks like you are looking at a rock face. One may imagine that this creature was already there when Augustus reigned in Rome, or perhaps only Marcus Aurelius. When the British arrived here 200 years ago, they could see thousands of these giants, but they didn’t think what a miracle it was, but how much lumber could be made of it. So it’s only fair that they now have a king who will constantly annoy them with his environmental obsession. May he reign long!

News from the land of laughter

Moderne Großstädte haben meist ein gemeinsames Problem: Hochhäuser schießen wie Pilze aus dem Boden, besonders in den Innenstädten! Die wenigsten können jedoch als Wohnraum genutzt werden und die Versiegelung des Bodens führt darüberhinaus zum Anstieg der Temperatur. Die meisten Städte haben jahrelang nichts dagegen unternommen, und wenn, dann nur halbherzig. Ein einzelner Stadtbediensteter, wie hier in Auckland, kann die Plage unmöglich eindämmen. Andere Metropolen wie New York und Tokio versprühen das Unhausvernichtungsmittel großflächig (sog. Chemtrails), bislang aber ohne sichtbaren Erfolg. In Berlin und Frankfurt überlegt man, Flächenbombardements einzusetzen. Damit habe man in der Vergangenheit ja gute Erfahrungen gemacht.

Overdue countermeasure – Modern cities usually have a common problem: high-rise buildings are springing up like mushrooms, especially in the inner cities! However, very few can be used as living space and the sealing of the floor also leads to a rise in temperature. Most cities haven’t done anything about it for years, and if they did, it was only half-heartedly. A single city official, like here in Auckland, cannot possibly contain the plague. Other metropolises such as New York and Tokyo spray the houseticide over large areas (so-called chemtrails), but so far without any visible success. In Berlin and Frankfurt they are considering using carpet bombing. They have had good experiences with this in the past.

Als neulich scheinbar ein außerirdisches Raumschiff auf der Erde landete, setzte es sich direkt auf zwei schöne alte viktorianische Gebäude. Das allein wäre schon eine Zumutung gewesen, auch wenn während der Landung außer etwas verschüttetem Tee kein nennenswerter Schaden entstanden war, doch anstatt nun, wie es zu erwarten gewesen wäre, eine Unterredung mit dem Premierminister zu verlangen, sagte das Raumschiff nichts, sondern saß einfach nur da. Wie sich nach einer Viertelstunde jedoch herausstellte, handelte es sich gar nicht um ein Raumschiff, sondern offenbar um eine, vielleicht sogar außerirdische Lebensform, die überhaupt kein Interesse an einer guten Unterhaltung hatte, sondern sich völlig schamlos durch den Schornstein erleichterte und eines der Häuser bis unter den Dachboden mit seinen Exkrementen anfüllte, wobei die Hauskatze und einige Goldfische verstarben. Danach verschwand es wieder wortlos ins All. Der Premierminister machte anschließend deutlich, dass ein weiterer Besuch nicht erwünscht sei.

First and definitely last contact – When an apparent alien spaceship landed on Earth the other day, it landed right on top of two beautiful old Victorian buildings. That alone would have been an impertinence, even if no damage worth mentioning had occurred during the landing apart from some spilled tea, but instead of demanding an interview with the Prime Minister, as might have been expected, the spacecraft said nothing and just sat just there. However, as it turned out after a quarter of an hour, it was not a spaceship at all, but apparently a life form, perhaps even extraterrestrial, which was not at all interested in a good conversation, but rather shamelessly relieved itself down the chimney and filled one of the housees with his excrement up to the attic, killing the cat and some goldfish. After that it disappeared again into space without a word. The Prime Minister then made it clear that another visit was not desired.
