Während hier in Europa immer mehr Fahrradparkplätze gebaut werden, auf denen man sein Rad an eine Metallkonstruktion ketten kann, denkt man am anderen Ende der Welt auch an jene, die einen Abstellplatz für ihre Metallkonstruktionen brauchen. In Neuseeland werden daher nun im öffentlichen Raum zunehmend Fahrräder installiert, an die sich Metallkonstruktionen aller Art einfach anketten lassen.

Only fair! – While here in Europe more and more bicycle parking spaces are being built where you can chain your bike to a metal structure, on the other side of the world people are also thinking about those who need a place to park their metal structures. In New Zealand, bicycles are now increasingly being installed in public spaces to which all kinds of metal structures can easily be chained.

Als sich intelligente Lebewesen doch noch dazu entscheiden, uns zu besuchen, erkennen wir sie gar nicht als solche, sondern halten sie für etwas, das man für etwas anderes verwenden kann, indem man es tötet und aufisst, verbrennt oder einfach nur so kaputtmacht. Auch die Außerirdischen erkennen uns nicht als intelligente Lebensformen, weil wir es nicht nur nicht sind, sondern weil sie uns zu Recht für etwas halten, das versucht, sie aufzuessen oder einfach so kaputtzumachen. Dann tun sie, was intelligente Lebensformen mit nicht intelligenten Lebensformen eben so zu tun pflegen.

Forecast for the day after tomorrow – When intelligent creatures decide to visit us, we don’t even recognize them as such, but think of them as something that can be used for something else by killing it and eating it, burning it or just destroying it. Wenn man so lange ein Paar ist, wie die Bank und der Busch, dann kann man auch einige Jahrzehnte nebeneinander am Strand herumsitzen und hinaus auf das Wasser schauen, ohne dabei ein Wort zu sagen und ohne dass einem dabei langweilig wird. Als der Busch dann als erstes das Gefühl hatte, jetzt sei es aber doch genug mit dem Herumsitzen und aufs Wasser hinaus schauen und dem Schweigen, da merkte er, dass er sich keinen Zentimeter vom Fleck rühren konnte. Er raschelte ein bisschen mit den Zweigen und Blättern und beschloss, die Bank nicht mit diesem kleinen Problem zu behelligen. Sie hatte ja schon genug damit zu tun, dass sich ständig Leute auf sie setzten und ihre Hintern an ihr rieben.

Es war schon überraschend, dass man in Neuseeland statt der 0 die 24 verwendet. Ich vermute, dass das beim Rechnen zu Problemen führt, aber sind es nicht die kulturellen Differenzen, die das Reisen so interessant machen?

Different countries, different customs – It was surprising that 24 was used instead of 0 in New Zealand. I suspect that this leads to problems with arithmetic, but isn’t it the cultural differences that make traveling so interesting?

Endlich mal einfach auf der faulen Haut liegen!

Finally vacation! – Finally just lying on your lazy skin!

Es ist ja bekannt, dass Kolumbus, als er nach Spanien zurückgekehrt war, bodenlosen Blödsinn faselte, was er auf der anderen Seite der Welt alles erlebt habe. Tatsächlich hatte ihn Isabella von Kastilien nur losgeschickt, weil es sie nach frischer Ananas gelüstete, die es aber in ganz Spanien nirgends gab, was daran lag, dass niemand wusste, was eine Ananas ist, da sie noch gar nicht erfunden worden war. Kolumbus hatte auch keine Ahnung, aber der Wunsch der Königin musste natürlich erfüllt werden. Er segelte also los, ging irgendwo an Land, schlug ein paar Wilden auf das Haupt, weil sie weder Spanisch noch Italienisch verstehen wollten und ließ sich dann den Weg zum nächsten Supermarkt weisen. Dort kaufte er, was wie eine Ananas aussah, fuhr schnell nach Hause, denn Isabella war für ihre Ungeduld bekannt, und übergab Einkauf und Wechselgeld. Die Königin fand, dass die Ananas hässlich und viel zu süß und klebrig sei. Um die blöde Kuh irgendwie zufriedenzustellen, log Kolumbus, er habe außerdem eine neue Welt entdeckt, was natürlich Unsinn war, denn wie jeder weiß, hatte er ja nur den westlichen Weg nach Indien gefunden.

How it really was – It is well known that Columbus, when he returned to Spain, babbled endless nonsense about what he had experienced on the other side of the world. In fact, Isabella of Castile had only sent him because she had a craving for fresh pineapples, which you couldn’t find anywhere in Spain, because nobody knew what a pineapple was, as they hadn’t even been invented yet. Columbus had no idea either, but of course the queen’s wish had to be fulfilled. So he sailed off, went ashore somewhere, slapped a couple of savages on the head because they didn’t want to understand Spanish or Italian, and then asked for directions to the nearest supermarket. There he bought what looked like a pineapple, drove home quickly, as Isabella was known for her impatience, and handed over the purchase and change. The queen thought the pineapple was ugly and way too sweet and sticky. To please the idiot somehow, Columbus lied that he had also discovered a new world, which of course was nonsense, since as everyone knows he had only found the western route to India.
