Als sich neulich über dem Westen Münchens ein schwarzes Loch auftat, da hegte man im Rathaus schon heimlich die Hoffnung, es möge das tiefschwarze Aubing verschlingen und am besten Allach-Untermenzing gleich mit, aber das schwarze Loch tat nichts dergleichen, sondern schwebte eine Weile untätig herum, bis es anscheinend genug gesehen hatte und in Richtung Süden weiterzog, um die nächsten zwei Wochen über Süditalien herumzuhängen. Die Wissenschaft zuckte nur mit den Schultern, da sich ein solches Verhalten ja von selbst erkläre.

Science news – When a black hole opened up over the west of Munich recently, the town hall secretly harbored the hope that it would swallow up the ultra-conservative Aubing and preferably also Allach-Untermenzing, but the black hole did nothing of the sort and just hovered inactively for a while until it seemed to have seen enough and moved on south to hang around southern Italy for the next two weeks. Science just shrugged, since such behavior is self-explanatory.

Als einmal drei Mathematiker hungrig waren, berechneten sie für verschiedene Lebensmittel die Wahrscheinlichkeit, mit der diese ihren Appetit stillen könnten, und kamen zu dem Ergebnis, dass ein mit Käse, Salami und Tomatensoße belegtes warmes Brot am besten dafür geeignet wäre. Und weil sie zu dritt waren, gaben sie dem Brot die Form eines Dreiecks. Doch als sie sich eben daran machen wollten, das Brot zu verspeisen, bemerkten sie, dass sich ein Dreieck kaum gerecht in drei Teile teilen lässt. Also berechneten sie einen Weg, dies zu tun. Darüber verging die Zeit, und als sie endlich herausgefunden hatten, wie Seitenhalbierende, Dicke der Messerklinge und Erhabenheit des Belags ins Verhältnis zu setzen seien, war das warme Brot schon erkaltet und von der Tomatensoße durchweicht, so dass man es nur noch dem Hund geben konnte. Erst Jahrhunderte darauf erfand ein Mann aus Napoli die Pizza und als man ihm später die Geschichte von den drei Mathematikern erzählte, betrachtete er das wunderbare Rund seiner Schöpfung, machte mit dem Mund ein Geräusch und eine dazu passende Handbewegung.

How the invention of pizza almost went awry – Once, when three mathematicians were hungry, they calculated the probability that various foods would satisfy their appetite and concluded that warm bread topped with cheese, salami, and tomato sauce would do best. And because there were three of them, they gave the bread the shape of a triangle. But just as they were about to eat the bread, they noticed that a triangle could hardly be divided fairly into three parts. So they calculated a way to do this. Time passed, and by the time they figured out how to relate bisector, thickness of knife blade, and elevation of topping, the warm bread was already cold and soggy with tomato sauce, so that it could only be given to the dog. Centuries after, a man from Naples invented pizza and when he was later told the story of the three mathematicians, he looked at the wonderful round of his creation, made a noise with his mouth and made a hand movement to match.
