Ein schlecht gehütetes Familiengeheimnis ist, weshalb in N., dem Wohnort meines Großonkels F., immer schlechtes Wetter herrscht. Angeblich ist F.s Großvater daran schuld, der einen Wetterhahn auf das Dach seines Hauses gesetzt hat. Aber weil der Hahn unbeweglich ist, zeige er seitdem stets das gleiche Wetter an. Und ja, in N. ist es eigentlich immer bewölkt und regnerisch, wenn wir den Großonkel besuchen. Mein Vater sagt, das liege daran, dass der Großonkel im Spätherbst Geburtstag habe und dann herrsche eben meistens schlechtes Wetter. Meine Tanten jedoch wollen nicht an Zufall glauben, was überhaupt kein Geheimnis ist, weder gut noch schlecht gehütet.

From the family album – A poorly kept family secret is why the weather is always bad in N., where my great-uncle F. lives. Supposedly, it’s F.’s grandfather’s fault, who put a weather vane on the roof of his house. But because the vane is immobile, it’s always shown the same weather ever since. And yes, it’s actually always cloudy and rainy in N. when we visit my great-uncle. My father says that’s because my great-uncle’s birthday is in late autumn, and the weather is usually bad then. My aunts, however, don’t want to believe it’s a coincidence, which is no secret at all, neither well-kept nor poorly kept.

Das ist eine pfiffige Idee! Warum viel Geld ausgeben und eine anstrengende Reise auf sich nehmen, nur um am anderen Ende der Welt in der Sonne zu liegen? Mit einer Zimmersonne kann man sich die Tortur sparen, während des Sonnenbads weiter seine Lieblingsserien glotzen und ist unabhängig von der Tageszeit.

Vacation at home – That’s a clever idea! Why spend a lot of money and undertake a strenuous trip just to lie in the sun on the other side of the world? With an indoor sun, you can avoid the torture and continue watching your favorite TV shows while sunbathing, regardless of the time of day.

Früher gingen die Leute noch auf die Toilette, heute gehen sie nur noch aufs Klo, aufs WC oder sie belästigen einen mit Details. Allerdings muss ich zugeben, dass auch ich keine Ahnung habe, welches Bedürfnis man einst mit ‚Francesco‘ bezeichnet hat. Das ist wohl eine Aufgabe für Volkskundler.

Signs that will soon be obsolete – People used to go to the toilet; today they just go to the bathroom, to the WC, or they bother you with details. However, I have to admit that I have no idea what need was once referred to as ‚Francesco‘. That’s probably a task for folklorists.
