Venezianische Wissenschaftler haben Hoffnung, dass Venedig nun doch nicht untergehen wird, denn was wie eine sehr schmale Gasse im Sestiere San Marco aussieht, wurde neulich als tektonische Spalte identifiziert. Demnach driften die drei westlichen Sestiere Richtung Kontinentaleuropa, während sich Canareggio, Castello und der Großteil von San Marco auf Australien zubewegen. Warum sie diesen weiten Weg auf sich nehmen, anstatt sich dem viel näher gelegenen Afrika anzuschließen, ist weiter unklar. Jedenfalls wird sich, noch bevor der Meeresspiegel so stark ansteigt, dass die Stadt versinkt, an ihrer Stelle schon bald nur ein stinkender Sumpf befinden. Das zuständige Ministerium in Rom teilt mit, es habe dazu keine Meinung.

Science news – Venetian scientists are hoping Venice won’t sink after all, as what appears to be a very narrow alleyway in the San Marco sestiere has recently been identified as a tectonic fissure. Accordingly, the three western sestiere are drifting towards continental Europe, while Canareggio, Castello and most of San Marco are moving towards Australia. It remains unclear why they make this long journey instead of joining much closer Africa. In any case, before the sea level rises so much that the city sinks, there will soon be only a stinky swamp in its place. The responsible ministry in Rome says it has no opinion on the matter.
