Als sich die italienischen Einwanderer 1919 in Montreal eine Kirche gebaut haben, wollten sie es sich hübsch machen und tatsächlich ist der Innenraum der Kirche zwar ein eklektizistischer Fiebertraum, aber durchaus schön anzusehen. Jedenfalls denkt man das, bis man das Fresko in der Apsis näher betrachtet.
Dort wird nicht nur der Duce zu Pferde gefeiert, sondern auch die Kollaboration der katholischen Kirche mit dem italienischen Faschismus verklärt.
Die christliche Missionierung der Afrikaner, die hier fast durchweg als Kinder dargestellt werden, war freilich kein zivilisatorisches Projekt, sondern brutaler Kolonialismus. Eine historische Einordnung, gar eine kritische, findet sich nirgends im Gebäude; man scheint bis heute kein Problem mit dem Fresko zu haben, so wie ja auch ein Großteil der Italiener in Italien ein ziemlich ungezwungenes Verhältnis zum Faschismus pflegt. Als Deutscher kann man das befremdlich finden, zumindest solange, bis das Bürgertum unter dem Druck der Höcke-Nazis dann doch die bildungspolitische Wende um 180 Grad vollzieht.

At least, that’s what you think until you take a closer look at the fresco in the apse. It not only celebrates the Duce on horseback, but also glorifies the collaboration of the Catholic Church with Italian fascism. The Christian missionization of the Africans, who are almost always portrayed as children, was of course not a civilizing project, but brutal colonialism. There is no historical classification, let alone a critical one, anywhere in the building; to this day, no one seems to have a problem with the fresco, just as the majority of Italians in Italy have a fairly relaxed relationship with fascism. As a German, you may find this strange, at least until the bourgeoisie, under pressure from the Höcke-Nazis, makes a 180-degree turn in educational policy.
